Unexpected Benefits of Volunteering for the Women’s Center
This year, our cultural awareness of domestic and sexual violence has been front and center. With the #MeToo Movement, Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court hearings, and the upcoming 2020 presidential election, the news media coverage is invoking conversations in homes, schools, and coffee shops across the country. Even large corporations like Gillette, with their controversial commercial about masculinity, are taking a stand. It is an important time to be involved with the mission of the Women’s Center.
Serving Marquette and Alger counties, the Women’s Center is just completing a significant year of fundraising to pay off the mortgage for its shelter, Harbor House. But a strong Women’s Center takes more than just monetary donations; we need volunteers. Even if your budget can’t afford a large donation, there’s so much you can do to help the Women’s Center with just a little bit of your time.
In addition to furthering our cause, volunteering for the Women’s Center can be beneficial to you, too. When you join our team, you will have the opportunity to network, build skills, boost your mood, and improve the community you live and work in.
Meet New People
It takes skills of every kind to run an organization as involved as the Women’s Center. When you join us through volunteering, you will meet people in our community who are experts in the fields of event planning, law, media outreach, organization, and counseling, just to name a few. All of them come together to work toward increasing awareness and providing resources for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
For those of you just starting out in your career, joining the Women’s Center through volunteering is an excellent way to network with people in your field of interest and expand your knowledge of other jobs and opportunities in our community. For those of you who have been in your work for awhile, it’s a good way to share your talents with others for an important cause.
When you volunteer for the Women’s Center, you will have a chance to use your talents in myriad ways. Are you a CPA? Consider joining our finance committee. Interested in party planning? Help us host our annual events. Love shopping? Spend a few hours volunteering at our Pak Ratz Resale store!
Perhaps you want to learn or improve a new skill. Are you interested in social media marketing or graphic design? You don’t have to be an expert to help the Women’s Center. We will work together. And, as you gain new abilities, you can add them to your resume!
Want to increase your confidence in public speaking? Share your ideas with us in small groups or volunteer to ask businesses for donations. (It’s surprising how many will say yes, if you just ask!)
Boost Your Mood
Research confirms having a sense of purpose is good for our mental health. When you join the volunteers who serve the Women’s Center, you will learn there are many in our community that need our help for success. We often get into the rut of our own daily lives and forget about those who are suffering. When you have a chance to work in tandem with others for a greater good, your mood, and our community, improves.
Volunteering is also a good way to model for your kids or others around you that giving back is an important component of a well-lived life. In this way, we can continue the cycle of stepping up to help for generations to come. Or maybe you just want to give back to the Women’s Center because it made a difference in your life or the life of someone you know.
Whatever your reasons are to get involved or how you want to share your talents, we need your help to continue to increase the awareness of domestic and sexual violence in our community and provide resources for those who have fallen victim.
